Google DeepMind today announced Aurora, a compact foundation model designed to run entirely on consumer devices. Aurora uses adaptive sparsity and quantization to deliver multi-modal capabilities—speech, text, and vision—offline on smartphones and edge hardware, reducing latency and preserving user privacy. Google envisions an upcoming developer SDK to integrate Aurora into mobile apps, enabling on-device translation, transcription, image understanding, and assistive features without mandatory cloud connectivity.
